CEREC Same-Day Crowns in Lynnwood: How One-Visit Crowns Work, Cost, and How They Compare to Lab Crowns

For most of dental history, getting a crown meant two appointments: one to prepare the tooth and take a gooey impression, then two weeks in a plastic temporary while a lab made the real thing. CEREC technology collapses that into a single visit. At The Dental Atelier in Lynnwood, we design and mill your porcelain crown in-house while you wait, so you walk out with the finished tooth the same day.

What CEREC actually is

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. In plain terms it is three things working together in the office: a digital scanner that replaces impression trays, design software that builds the crown on screen, and a milling unit that carves it from a solid block of dental ceramic. The crown is then fired, glazed, and bonded to your tooth. Total time in the chair is usually around two hours.

Step by step: your same-day crown appointment

  1. Numbing and preparation. We remove decay or the old filling and shape the tooth so the crown has room to fit. This part is identical to a traditional crown.
  2. Digital scan. A small camera captures thousands of images of the prepared tooth and your bite in a few minutes. No trays, no gagging, no distorted impressions.
  3. Design. Dr. Narang designs the crown on screen, matching the shape of the original tooth and the way it meets the opposing teeth. You can watch if you like.
  4. Milling. A ceramic block in your shade goes into the milling unit. About 15 to 20 minutes later the crown is carved.
  5. Finishing. The crown is tried in, adjusted, stained and glazed to match neighboring teeth, then fired in a small oven to harden the ceramic.
  6. Bonding. The finished crown is permanently cemented. We check the bite and you leave with a tooth you can eat on that evening, once the numbness wears off.

Why patients choose same-day crowns

  • One appointment. One trip to Lynnwood, one round of numbing, one afternoon off work.
  • No temporary crown. Temporaries break, fall off, and leak, which is how a tooth gets sensitive between visits. Skipping the temporary skips those problems.
  • Precise fit. Digital scans eliminate the shrinkage and air bubbles of physical impressions, so the margins where crown meets tooth are tighter.
  • Strong, metal-free ceramic. The lithium disilicate and zirconia blocks we mill are highly durable and translucent like natural enamel.
  • More tooth saved. Because the crown is designed from an exact scan, we can often prepare the tooth more conservatively.

How much does a CEREC crown cost in Lynnwood?

A same-day crown costs about the same as a lab-made porcelain crown. In the Seattle-area market, a single all-ceramic crown commonly falls in the range of roughly $1,200 to $2,000 before insurance, depending on the tooth, the material, and whether a buildup is needed under the crown. Most dental plans cover crowns at around 50 percent after the deductible, and we verify your benefits and give you a written estimate before we start. If you do not have insurance, ask about our in-house membership plan, which discounts crowns and other restorative care. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide to dental crown costs in Lynnwood.

When we still recommend a lab crown

CEREC handles the large majority of crowns, but we will suggest a lab crown when the case calls for it: multi-unit bridges, some implant restorations, a front tooth where a ceramist's hand-layered porcelain will match a difficult shade better, or when the bite demands a specific material we do not mill in-house. The goal is the right crown, not the fastest one.

Frequently asked questions

Are same-day crowns as strong as lab crowns?

Yes. The ceramic blocks are manufactured under controlled conditions and are at least as strong as lab porcelain. Studies following CEREC crowns for ten-plus years show survival rates comparable to traditional crowns.

Will the color match my other teeth?

We select the block shade against your natural teeth and then custom-stain and glaze the crown before bonding. For most teeth the match is excellent.

Can CEREC be used for inlays and onlays?

Yes. When a tooth is too damaged for a filling but does not need a full crown, a same-day porcelain inlay or onlay conserves much more of the natural tooth.

Does it hurt?

No more than any filling. The tooth is fully numbed, and because there is no temporary phase, post-visit sensitivity is usually lower. If dental anxiety is a concern, sedation options are available.
